In travel planning, there’s plans and there’s rock solid. Very little ends up being rock solid.
For our Le Petit Voyage, some rock solid dates include:
- July 10 (arrival in Amsterdam – 4 days on our own)
- July 14 (meeting up with our friends, the Brouillets – they’re touring us around)
- July 19 (leaving our friends, the Brouillets)
- July 24 (meeting our friends, the Trapps, in Germany – they own a boat, with which will motor on the Rhine)
- August 11 (meeting our friends, the Gaureschis, in northern Italy)
- August 20 (with Mom and Dad in Athens)
- August 28 (Our flight home)
We’ve had a few days free up early in the trip, so we’ve decided to add a bit of complexity to the equation: a road trip through Belgium. We’re now renting a car in Den Haag and visiting Bruges, Ghent, and Brussels (all UNESCO sites). We then drive on to Wiesbaden. Here’s what the map looks like (Thanks. Mrs. Google).
This is all La Fille’s ™ idea (thanks, love!).
The economics work out. With five extra days, it makes sense to drop into another city, and Bruges/Bruxelles are on the way to Bavaria. Train to Bruges from Den Haag would have been 280CAD, and then train onward to Wiesbaden another 300CAD. Our BMW rental will cost 787CAD plus gas. But we get much more flexibility, potentially cheaper AirBNBs (that can be outside the major towns), and we get to see scenery at our speed. And go where we want.
Like the islands of Zeeland.
And sure, I splurged a bit and upgraded to the Beemer for a hundred and fifty bucks.
Trip planning is never done. Looking for Air BNB now in Bruges and Brussels.
