You know how music resonates with you? How a certain song can bring you back to a time and place with crystal clarity? My earliest recollection of such is Band on the Run, by Paul McCartny and the Wings. I hear that now, and I’m my Mom’s Volkswagan Beetle (the original one) being driven to daycare in Montreal. Day after day, I’d hear the same song, same time, just like clockwork. It left an impression on me.
I bought my first Dave Matthews Band (DMB from here on in) CD on spec in 1997. It was a live album, recorded at Red Rocks. It was fabulous, and left an impression. Still does. It’s what brought me to Morrison, and the Red Rocks Ampitheatre, just west of Denver.
The trip began 3 days and 2400 km ago, and ended as we pulled into the Red Rocks site at about 4 pm on Sunday. Parties were well in swing, with BBQs and music and a wonderfully jovial atmosphere all around us. There were quite a few Colorado plates in the parking areas (as you might expect) but mostly we saw out of state plates. Florida, New York, Ontario, and of course, our lonely Alberta plate.
At our seats, we were surrounded by a couple of local gals catching DMB for the first time, a young couple from Indiana, who were big fans, and in front of us, a mother/daughter team (hello Crystal) from Arkansas who were, apparently, even bigger fans. They had put their name in the draw for each of the three nights (hoping for one night) and, surprisingly, had won tix for each of the three nights.
The concert was awesome, and having just heard from Crystal, I now have photos to prove it. Sorta. Definitely worth the trip out.
Hi Ted – Glad you got the photos. My camera only had a 2x zoom so the stage photos were like watching ants….oh well. Hope all is well.
