What Novel Are You?

November 25

These kinds of quizzes are like horrorscopes; the results are so obliquely general that they can’t help but to stick. But in this quiz, for which there are six A or B type questions, there are 2^6 different outcomes. That’s 64 books they’ve selected, and categories into which they want to squeeze you a me.

Coincidence, then, that I chose one of my top five novels ever? Funny how that works.

You’re Ender’s Game!
by Orson Scott Card
To you, most everything is a game. It’s summertime, and the living’s
easy. Even when there’s a war on, it’s just a game to you. But even though you’ve
historically been able to meet every challenge, there are some doubts about what lies
ahead. Are you sure you’re up to the next test? Don’t forget to pay attention to your
siblings.

So a (potentially) cheesy quiz, but a great segue to a great book. But you won’t read it, ‘cos it’s (gasp!) science fiction. Not even fantasy. Orson Scott Card is one of my favourite writers in the genre, and in this one he touches on non traditional themes of giftedness, alienation, pyschology, leadership, and duty. It’s also the story of how a nine year old kid (Ender) leads the effort to defeat an alien invasion by the “buggers”.

Yeh, guaranteed to get you to read it. But read it you should. And then hop onto the sequel, Speaker for the Dead, set 3000 years later. If I’m asked, I give this as my all time fav.

Both also won both the Hugo and the Nebula awards, in subsequent years, no less. These are the Acadamy and People’s Choice award in the SciFi arena.

So hey, go out and read. -B’s bought several copies of the book (and keeps losing them). There’s a recommendation for you.
